The moral is a bit obvious, but to paraphrase Stan Lee, every parable is someone’s first, though I think adding in stuff about a book that Twilight misjudges feels like an unnecessary duplication. The weaker parts are Spike being unhelpful (and by mentioning zombies and 'Rainbow Crash' helped inspire the two worst episodes of the entire series) and Apple Bloom wandering off on her own being both the cause and solution to the problem. The story itself is fine, like the classic Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street." I also like the creativity with the Poison Joke afflications, like FlutterGuy. ![]() I love the episode for the introduction of Zecora, who I always wished the show would do more with. I really struggled between calling this Okay versus Very Good. Between Twilight’s adorkable excitement in having her first slumber party with AJ and Rarity trying (and failing) to hide their mutual annoyance with one another, this episode is simply hilarious.ĩ. The episode that launched the Applejack-Rarity ship in full. Going up against the dragon gave us some entertaining moments but the ending left things on an odd note. Fluttershy was a considerable load on the journey, but did end up saving the day. The build up getting to the dragon was a bit long and not super engaging. I know I'm in a minority on this but I-don't hate Snips and Snails. But seeing Twilight's dilemma and her finally showing her stuff was really cool. The townsfolk cheering and laughing at Trixie's jackassery didn't help things. Though if she can't handle some very minor heckling, well, that doesn't say much for her as a performer. I'm not in the camp of Trixie fans who feel that she was wronged in this episode and thus her actions were justified, but having an actual stage magician be the example of someone who boasts too much wasn't the best choice either. I also like how it took its time Gilda not being immediately introduced and it started with Pinkie and Rainbow getting some time to bond first.Ħ. And the moral about toxic friendships was a good one, even if Gilda was later redeemed. folks having a good sense of humor, no mean-spiritedness and no revenge pranking). Besides introducing a new race, I liked how this episode avoided the clichés associated with pranking and episodes about them (i.e. She could be really entertaining and funny and that comes out pretty strongly here.ĥ. I loved how quirky and funny she was in the first two seasons, something that sadly got dropped as time went on. ![]() When the show started, Applejack was my second favorite character. The comedic moments with Twilight being harangued by unwanted gifts and chased by the crowd were very entertaining, but it just didn't quite fully engage me-probably because of how rough the Mane Six seem after having watched years of episodes fleshing them out more.Ĥ. ![]() As the first regular episode of the series, it’s nicely low-key.
